Game of Thrones filming in Šibenik rolls on, and more

Filming of Game of Thrones season 5 continues in the Croatian town of Šibenik today.

Yesterday, one fan even managed to capture some footage of the goings on in the square by the Cathedral of St. James, where cast members Maisie Williams, Ian Beattie, Mark Gatiss, and Roger Ashton-Griffiths have all been seen filming.

Minor spoilers after the cut.

Sources have confirmed that Peter Dinklage is filming at the arena set at St. John’s Fortress. We shared some images of the set there yesterday.

In an interview with MTV UKCharles Dance teased the return of Tywin Lannister in season 5. He stated that he’s “not completely missing out on the next series”, and we “haven’t seen the last of Tywin Lannister”.

Cian: Lots of sites have already picked up on Dance’s return. At the least, it’s probably his corpse lying at his wake, and at most, he could make an appearance in Cersei’s rumored Maggy the Frog flashback.

  1. Lady Nym,

I think “in that T shirt” is very much redundant in that sentence.

BTW, looking at the known Season 5 cast at the GoT Wiki, I realized we probably don’t know the full MAIN cast yet. Why do I say this? Season 1 only had 18 main cast members; season 2 had 25; season 3 had 28; and season 4 27.

Three people have been reported as being promoted for Season 5: Nathalie Emmanuel as Missandei, Michiel Huisman as Daario Naharis, and Tom Wlaschiha as… who the hell knows (he could be Jaqen, or the Kindly Man with Jaquen’s face.) And that makes 25. I very much doubt we are going backwards, so who do you guess will it be? New characters, such as Alexander Siddig as Prince Doran? Maybe also old characters being promoted, like the Boltons?

  2. I think book readers are in for the biggest deviation from the books yet.

Lady Stoneheart is out. Lord Stoneheart (Tywin Lannister) is in.

Lord Stoneheart, angry with his children, sees them as unworthy of the name Lannister and begins to plot their downfall.

    I know, I know…..

  3. Moon Boy,

That’s not how spoilers work. The code is in singular. Spoiler, in brackets.

And you’re not actually serious, are you? If not, that was a good joke 🙂

  4. LukaNieto:
    Moon Boy,
    that was a good joke

A joke that’s been around Facebook comments since the day before is not a great joke anymore… 😉

Anyway… I hope he’s talking about the funeral and the funeral only. Having Tywin wandering about in flashbacks, dream sequences and whatnot would kinda undermine his death…

  5. guys why dont u report on walking dead its the best show its better than got it have more viewers than got

  6. Gravemaster,

Probably a mistake since HBO confirmed he’s doing episodes 9 and 10. Also, I can’t imagine Arya getting that far in her story as early as episode 2, she might only arrive at Braavos at episode 2.

  7. Gravemaster,

Interesting. That contradicts the official statements, according to which:

Michael Slovis: episodes 1 and 2
Mark Mylod: episodes 3 and 4
Jeremy Podeswa: episodes 5 and 6
Miguel Sapochnik: episodes 7 and 8
David Nutter: episodes 9 and 10

Considering that we already saw David Nutter and that this is the same scene at Braavos we have already seen (with Mace and Tycho, and Meryn and Arya), I assume the episode number is what’s wrong. I mean, they are obviously not having that scene so early in the season; this is finale material.

    jentario,

She won’t spend a whole episode in the boat. That didn’t even happen in the book: she arrived at the House of Black and White and met the Kindly Man in her first chapter. That’s episode 1 material. Unless you’re suggesting they’re skipping Arya the first episode… which I doubt, since she’s a fan favorite character and her storyline is one of the most anticipated, by book readers and show watchers alike. Also, it’s a good idea to set up the season-arc for a character early on, which is also why Tyrion will probably know he’s heading to Daenerys by the end of the premiere… again, just as it happened in the books.
  8. LukaNieto,

Or maybe for some reason he’s been asked to film some scenes from 502. Maybe Slovis has run out of schedule or something. I don’t really know how that works.

  9. LukaNieto,

She skipped the first episode in seasons 2 (kind of, she appeared in one shot) and 3. I was saying that might happen again in 5. In any case, no way she manages to become Cat of the Canals AND assassinate Meryn one episode after she arrives at Braavos.
  10. jentario,

I completely agree. As I said, that’s obviously for the finale. Not necessarily the last episode, but certainly the climax of her story arc this coming season. About the other thing, I doubt they’ll skip her again, but obviously it’s just an opinion. We’ll have to wait and see.

  11. I doubt that

mace and ser meryn are even in braavos that early on in the season…they need to bring it up at the small council in the first few episodes that someone needs to go talk to the iron bank since the crown owes them a lot…mace has to sail there and get there…im assuming he gets tehre mid to late in the season and this is indeed where mercy happens…they shoot out of order all the time and im not gonna bank on someone saying this is for season 5 episode 2 all because of which directors were sited and which epsidoes they specifically said they were doing

If the past few years are any indication, we won’t definitively know who’s been added to the main cast roster until Season 5 starts airing and we see the actors’ names in the opening credits. Last season, it was widely speculated that Gwendoline Christie and Iwan Rheon would be promoted – and they were. However, the official Season 4 press release listed Michael McElhatton and Diana Rigg as series regulars as well. Neither one of them wound up appearing in the opening credits, but Kristofer Hivju and Hannah Murray did – a surprise since we’d heard almost nothing to suggest that such a promotion might be in the cards for those two.

In general, promotions such as those received by Michiel Huisman and Nathalie Emmanuel being confirmed this early are the exception rather than the rule. As for Tom Wlaschiha, the notion that he’ll be part of the main cast came from his agency’s website – information that has since been removed. I don’t think that we can treat his addition to the main cast (or, to be honest, his return to the show) as 100% confirmed – although I hope that it’s true.

Based on pure speculation, however, I personally think that there’s a very good chance that Michael McElhatton will be a member of the main cast this season (as mentioned above, Iwan Rheon was promoted last year). Other hypothetical candidates, based on their current prominence and tenure on the show, could include Daniel Portman, Ian McElhinney, Jacob Anderson, Diana Rigg, Finn Jones, Julian Glover, Gemma Whalen, Indira Varma, Dean Charles-Chapman, and Ciaran Hinds, just to name a few. Alexander Siddig and the rest of the Dornish contingent are less likely, at least in my opinion, because no brand-new cast members have been directly promoted to series regular status since Season 2 (when Stephen Dillane, Carice van Houten, Liam Cunningham, and Natalie Dormer joined the show). Obviously the vast majority of those actors won’t be promoted – in addition to Huisman, Emmanuel, and (possibly) Wlaschiha, I think that we’ll see one or two more at the max. However, it could be someone completely off the board. As I alluded to earlier, I certainly didn’t predict Kristofer Hivju and Hannah Murray becoming series regulars last year.

  13. Wow… For once, WiC got to something before this site did…

Anyway, I think Charles may be simply referring to his corpse at the funeral.
Though, since we know we’re getting a flashback with Maggy The Frog, it’s possible Tywin will appear there as well.

  14. Am i the only one who thinks arya is overrated? That mercy chapter was a struggle to get through

  15. Charles Dance for season 5 could be a few things… most already mentioned. His corpse in his chambers, and in the Sept before his funeral and Jaime’s vigil over it (I hope they have Dance recreate the facial expression from the books), the rumoured Maggy flashback, or any other flashbacks. I’d also quite like to see him during

Cersei’s walk of shame. Just had a quick read of that chapter from the books, to confirm that Cersei does see her father in the crowd, during her walk… along with Melara, Ned, Sansa, and Lady. And a guy who looks a little like Robert earlier on… but Tywin, Ned, Sansa, and the wolf are the big ones, they’re the ones that have an impact on Cersei, seeing them judging her, her facade shatters and she breaks down somewhat. Would be great to have Dance and his judging gaze, maybe a slight shake of the head, causing Cersei to snap during the walk.
  16. Ser Florian:

Just had a quick read of that chapter from the books, to confirm that ***** does see her father in the crowd, during her walk…

That has to be it. Glad they’re keeping that in.

  17. Aryamad,

Actually the stinky corpse he’ll be playing will be known as Coldhands. The one on the slab of stone will be instead played by Dean Charles-Chapman as part of a secret conspiracy by D+D to replace ever Lannister on the show with DCC.
  18. When did we get our first trailer of season 4 again? Currently looking forward to the season 5 trailer and the season 4 blu Ray history and lore. That makes the wait for season 5 a bit easier

  19. Turncloak,

The first official footage of Season 4 appeared in HBO’s annual “End of Year/Looking Forward” video in December (it was only about 5 seconds). The first official trailer was released in January. I would expect a similar timetable re: the promotional material for Season 5.

As for the Season 4 Blu-Ray/DVD, the official release date is February 17, 2015. I haven’t pre-ordered my copy yet, but I plan to do so soon. 🙂

  20. Lion of Night,

Why did you get he was going to play her? It was obvious to me he is playing

    Young Griff.

His hair is already spot-on. That’s why there was no casting call, this way the audience won’t have to get to know a brand new character. Can’t wait!

  21. Jared,

Finn Jones definitely should be promoted to series regular, he’s been around consistently since the beginning, ffs. They will be using him more this year, methinks, if they stick to book material.

  22. Lady Nym,

We can only hope! I know there is no reason to complain about a lack of strong female characters on this show, but I am still holding out hope Arianne may appear, even if it looks unlikely!

  23. Lady Nym:

    Arianne !! ? *__*

She looks suitable though I guess even minor Dornish characters would have a Mediterranean look. Whether they cast Arianne is still in the air I suppose though I’d like to see the character. Kyrion might have a point about a fighter. I haven’t mastered spoilers so won’t speculate about any particular one – the show has made some players rougher looking than in real life (eg the ones who play Brienne and Yara) so they might make her up to have a harder look about her.

Myself and Gravemaster came to the conclusion she is most likely to be playing Barsena Blackhair ( A Mereenese pit fighter) from her two filming dates and martial arts and stage combat experience. Of course we’re not certain but seems like the most likely fit at the moment.
On the surface I think she would still make a better Nym Sand (or our looking-like-cut Arianne) but she could make the female pit fighter work.

  25. TheTouchOfFrost,

Actually ToF, when I mentioned a fighter I was thinking of Barsena Blackhair (though I couldn’t think of her name) but I tried to phrase it in such a way as to not “spoil” for Unsullied, as I haven’t got my head round covering spoilers yet. But I guess Barsena is a minor character so mentioning her will not really “spoil”.

Now it wasn’t you, ToF, but somebody was speculating about an “aged down” Green Grace. I thought Josette Symons might make a good GG if they were not against casting a non-white person. I also thought about JS as a left-field Maggie the Frog but I doubt it.

From the casting links some months back, I seem to remember the Powers that Be were looking for an Asian type lady to play The Waif. I wondered if Jessica Henwick (though she must have at least part-British blood with a name like that???) had gone originally to try out for The Waif but the PtB liked her and cast her as Lady Nym. That’s just me surmising though…BTW we haven’t heard anything about who is playing The Waif, though I don’t think it is the lady we are speculating about here.

  26. I never understood the promotion of Hivju to permanent star member when his role is small or at least smaller in comparison to lets say McElhatton or Rigg or Jones or Emannuel. I mean his presence in the previous seasons was mainly complementary to Ygritte and now to Jon Snow and I don’t see the point of having him in the main star cast.

  27. Dame of Mercia,

I don’t think characters names are deemed spoilers are they?! If so apologies. I think names and a vague description of what they look like/what they are (unless they’re character is a reveal) isn’t spoilery. For example a Mereenese pitfighter called Barsena Blackhair tells you nothing about her personality or her role in the story.
Ah yeah, I think they did as I mentioned it would make more sense to bring Quaithe back in a Dany-advisory role. To be honest though, I think the GG is gone.
Jessica is indeed part English and has a very non-descript well-spoken English accent. Whether that changes for the show and she tries a more Dornish/Latino accent remains to be seen as it does with the whole Dornish contingent. It’s a possibility. Again based purely on looks, I think Jessica may have been a better fit for the waif than Nym. Although I imagined the Waif to be younger-looking, I think having her ethnicity to be more oriental was a natural way of increasing the show’s diversity. Guess we’ll have to wait to see why they picked her to play Nym. No news about the waif could mean they might have dropped the character altogether?

    dothrakian raven,

He’s a much more important character than Greyworm, Missandei ( who’s show versions really irk me) and arguably the Queen of Thornes.

With Mance captured he is likely to become the leader of the Wildings and is important for representing their story. In the show I sense they could have him go up to Hardhome or he’ll at least be needed to discuss terms of the Wilding settling the Gift with Jon.

Plus he’s actually a fun and interesting character which Greyworm and Missandei really aren’t ( contrived romance or not).

  28. TheTouchOfFrost,

    TheTouchOfFrost,

Well as I am Unsullied I don’t know what the future seasons will bring for him but until now his role was totally complementary to the Ygritte/Jon plot and except from a rather cold joke I haven’t seen the fun side of his presence. Rigg on the other side is a player of the game and an impressive character not to mention the fun side. McElhatton too (minus the fun side). Emannuel & Andersson are of course complementary characters to Daenerys but their screen time seems to be bigger than Hivjus and they support this side of the GOT that involves human contact, feelings and a sense of human decency. The reason why GOT has such an impact is because it covers an extensive spectrum of human types and in that sense I feel that Hivjus star cast status so far is a bit strange.

  29. TheTouchOfFrost,

“No news about the waif could mean they might have dropped the character altogether?”

Not likely. It just means we haven’t heard about the casting. It’s probably not a major part. We don’t know who’s playing Septa Unella either, or Maggy the Frog and some other roles.

  30. dothrakian raven,

We shall see how the show develop him but on the whole he is pretty highly regarded as a character in the books as he has a warmth yet power that really gives the reader more of a sense of the Wildings being human and not savages. I’ve liked his show character so far although I think they could have made him more charismatic and more of a presence but last season started to do that with the bear story and his fight with Thorne and conversation with Jon. I just think all the Greyworm/Missandei stuff has been really badly done. I’m still a bit bitter as I thought the books ‘Little Scribe’ Missandei was an interesting little side character, so aging her up and working in a love story with a eunuch was always going to have a job convincing me. Just find it an odd thing to add when they’ve got so much else to cover, all of it more interesting than a contrived love story. But hey, different strokes for different folks. I think Tormund can better demonstrate that human contact, feelings and sense of human decency better than the MissandGrey plotline as it shows how people alienate the enemy when they’re not that different from ourselves. But I guess his boobs aren’t as nice as Natalie’s!

    Sue the Fury,

Are we still assuming they’d specifically be looking for a South East Asian actress then? Have to admit the Maggy the Frog stuff worries me. The idea of a flashback has the potential to be very corny. If Cersei encounters her in the present then I think I’d much prefer that and it wouldn’t affect the storyline much at all.

In fact turning to a mystic when she’s starting to lose her grip and becoming more and more desperate and paranoid makes much more sense.
  31. Hey,
is there any info out there if Joe Dempsie (Gendrie), Lino Facioli (Robyn Arrin), Tara Fitzgerald (Selyse Baratheon), Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy), Patrick Malahide (Balon Greyjoy), Ian Gelder (Kevan Lannister), Eugene Simon (Lancel Lannister), Art Parkinson (Rickon Stark) and Natalia Tena (Osha) will be reprising their roles in season 5?

  32. Nickolai:

There a no confirmed returns for any of these characters.

Tara Fitzgerald: There is no reason to assume she won’t be in.
    Lino Facioli: same as bove.
Joe Dempsie: There are rumors that he may play a role in the KL (sparrow) storyline.
Eugene Simon: Rumors of a return as a religious fanatic. ES said in an interview that he can neither confirm or deny a return.
Ian Gelder: I personally believe that he won’t reappear.
  33. TheTouchOfFrost,

On retrospect I may have been overly cautious. I guess it wasn’t a spoiler when the casting announcement was made at Comic-Con and several characters were named then. I wondered if the change from books to show with Grey Worm and Missandei was because book Missandei had had two brothers who had been made into Unsullied (I don’t think that’s a spoiler as the show has gone in a different direction).

  34. Dame of Mercia,

Possibly but being a slave herself or just mentioning that one f her brothers was Unsullied when Dany began to converse with her would have been sufficient. Don’t need the silliness that they’re pursuing!
