The Mountain in Belfast, and Game of Thrones filming in Split continues despite flooding

Over the last week, Game of Thrones has been shooting at Diocletian’s Palace in Split, Croatia. After recent flooding in the area, there had been worries that filming would be affected, perhaps halted altogether.

Luckily, despite a volume of 38 liters of flood water per square meter, filming was able to proceed as planned both yesterday and today. Many fans were happy to report the news on Twitter.

The Mountain and QyburnIn cast news, we’ve heard from our sources in Belfast that Hafthor Bjornsson was in town earlier this week for a day or two. It’s unknown whether he was filming or doing a costume fitting or rehearsals.

His character, Gregor Clegane aka The Mountain, was last seen in season four in very poor shape, in the care of Qyburn the disgraced maester.

  1. I don’t agree with this. Recasting the Mountain every season is a tradition the show should honor. D&D are hacks and clearly don’t know what they are doing.

  2. Bloodraven and Varys were so far ahead of their time. “Little birds” have been the ultimate news collectors from reaches far and wide. It seems that GoT news reporting has taken the same approach. 🙂

(tweet, tweet…sshhhh! I’ve got something to report!)

  3. Ser Robert Strong. Handeled much better in the show. My guess is that he’ll be alluded to throughout the season but will only have a cameo.
  4. Dolorous Ned,

Hah, that’s funny! And this is one time

when recasting for a character would be plausible as we never see underneath Robert Strong’s face IIRC. And even if we did it body and head could be mangled and ravaged from whatever the poison and Quyburn is doing.

I like actually how people identify Dany as Khaleesi, without the slightest inkling it is a not a name. Never bothered me to be honest.

  5. It’s plain old Mountain, not Robert Strong. Qyburn got to work on him before he died and had his head removed.
  6. Tyrion Pimpslap,

This is actually a good point. Never considered that.

I guess that means the whole I-bring-you-a-gift-in-the form-of-a-skull thing is not happening. – Now that I think about it… Was it ever confirmed that the skull was Gregor’s?
  7. Maybe they need him around to get the measurements of his skull to make the prop skull to be sent to the Martells?

  8. Abyss,

No it wasn’t. Am I the only one who assumed the “gift/proof” sent to Dorne wasn’t his and that he still has all his body parts intact, especially THAT one? Eitherway, I imagine the most fantastical possibility won’t happen in the show, even if it’s the case in the books

I imagine they may still do that scene in Dorne, but with Jaime as the envoy. Or maybe not.

  9. Surely

they’re not going to squeeze in Cersei’s trial by combat this season too? Maybe just need him for that final part of Cersei’s walk. I guess Meryn is going to get it in Braavos then as with no Arys they need to free up a place in the Kingsguard…although in the show for all intents and purposes there’s only really Jaime in it at this point in time! Still like to see Loras join and not entirely sure why they didn’t have him do so.

    Surely

If they could squeez in Ned Stark’s arc of being Warden in the North, travelling south, becoming Hand of the King, unraveling the Golden Hair Mystery, attempting to seize the royal family, go to prison and then die, I think Cersei’s whole arc + trial and be fitted in 1 season

  11. The Mountain being possibly resurrected is, IMO, the sort of uninteresting story element that should have been left out. I mean, we have interestingly flamboyant characters like Euron and Victarion likely being left out, but the grunting Franken-Mountain sticks around? I concede that it may be that GRRM has a very important role for the Mountain in the future (valonquar and all that), but I’m not looking forward to seeing more of this guy.

  12. I think people just like the word “khaleesi,” and prefer it to “Daenarys.” I agree that khaleesi has a nicer sound to it.

  13. If that much rain didn’t stop the production, my fears that there will be trouble in Dubrovnik in late september/early october are totally erased. I quit my job just to become extra there….

  14. dave:
I wonder how many seasons it will take for some to realize her name isn’t actually khaleesi.

I think people realise that but they just like the sound of “Khaleesi”.

Are you the new rival to Rygar? Still, I do seem to remember Dolorous Edd liked a joke…

  15. I wouldn’t mind a holiday to Croatia. Glad, I skipped it this week!

Good news about the Mountain though. Interesting to see where they take it.

  16. Rod:
The Mountain isn’t going to be resurrected. He never died in the first place as far as show canon goes.

I mean, he is alive (albeit deteriorating quickly) at the beginning of aFfC, so at this point in the show, there isn’t really any difference right?

  17. I think the Mountain will have only one scene next season.

Some time after the walk, Qyburn presents this formidable helmeted knight and the potential trial is build up for next season.

  18. seppty,

Would the quality suffer thogh. Plus in the first season, there weren’t as many characters and story arcs floating around so they could keep it very tight. There’s a lot to get in this season and I get the feeling that they don’t want to go too far into WoW stuff (hence them releasing the Mercy chapter, etc ) if they don’t need to. Cersei’s season finale would be just fine as

finishing her walk and finding Robert Strong at the end of it
  19. Off topic, but does anyone know whether Eugene Simon (Lancel Lannister) confirmed or denied his role in season 5 while at TitanCon this weekend?

  20. Kyle,

In the TitanCon pics I’ve seen he didn’t have a Lancel haircut, though I suppose they could have had him get a Jaime cut or put him in a wig.

Yeah, as others have said, he did wear a wig in the previous seasons. However, if Patchface’s rumor of his return as a religion fanatic are true, it’s quite possible his short hair might be a part of the “new” Lancel.

  22. Tyrion Pimpslap,
    Kyle,

I asked Elio of AFOIAF/Westeros.org (who was at TitanCon with the actors today/yesterday) if Eugene said anything about coming back. He answered just now that Eugene said he would neither confirm nor deny his return for s5. To me that means he’s in. If he was out there’d be no reason for him to be vague about it.

  23. i wonder when some people will realize that people just like calling Khaleesi and it doesnt mean people dont know her name is daenerys ..even in books she is called khaleesi more than daenerys

Eugene pretty much said the same thing about seasons 3 and 4, and we all know how that turned out. So, I’m not holding my breath, I’ll wait for some other confirmation.

  25. dragonbringer,

Either they think her name is Khaleesi or they missed out on 3rd grade grammer. But I agree the show could have done a better job with that in season 2 (where she was almost exclusively called Khaleesi).

  26. Greenjones,

IMDB doesn’t show that he’s doing any other TV work right now, so I’m willing to assume that the twitter status essentially confirms it.

EDIT: I suppose it could refer to House of Anubis or a new series, but I’m still gonna be an optimist just for the sake of it.

If he does return next season, anyone have ideas about what he’ll be doing by the end of the season? It’s easy to speculate about his role early to mid season, but I wonder where his end point will be…

  27. Lion of Night,

Someone linked that on AFOIAF and I didn’t see that it was posted in August rather than today or this week until after I linked it here. If he is in of course he would’ve shot scenes in August, but it’s still not quite the newsworthy tweet I thought it was.

  28. Greenjones,

He could be talking about anything, so I wouldn’t take it as confirmation. But it does open up the possibility… I hope he’s in, I liked his acting. I’d be interested to see how they use the character.

  29. I address Jaime as King Slayer, Sandor as The Hound and of course I say Khaleesi. Sue me! Glad to see The Mountain around, it fits the theory.

  30. Quick question:

Why the hell wasn’t there any sort of announcement that all the people from WiC.net had moved over here?

I’ve been wondering where all the regulars had gone, and why that site suddenly has around 20-30+ comments instead of the usual 100+.

Now I know the reason. Thanks to whoever posted a comment over there letting us know. Feel like I’ve been in the dark for ages.
